The Copa Sudamericana is the second most important club competition in South America , only behind the Copa Libertadores . The tournament was born in 2002 when CONMEBOL reorganized the calendar for the second semester. It replaced the Mercosur Cup, the Merconorte Cup and the CONMEBOL Cup . The Brazilian teams did not contest the first edition. Between 2005 and 2008 he had CONCACAF clubs as guests.

Since the 2021 season, its structure underwent major changes. Until then, they faced teams in direct knockout round trips from the first to the last round. In that year, a group stage was incorporated into the format, to which all the participants from Argentina and Brazil are directly classified. The best two in each group advance to the round of 16. The title is decided by a single party in a neutral venue designated by CONMEBOL. The champion qualifies for the next edition of the Copa Libertadores, for the Recopa Sudamericana , for the event formerly known as Suruga Bank and also obtains a place in the new FIFA Club World Cup .

The broadcasting rights of the Copa Sudamericana go in the same package together with those of the Recopa Sudamericana , after a few seasons ago separated from those of the Copa Libertadores . At present, it can be seen in South America through channels such as ESPN, DirectTV Sports, Tigo Sports, Dexary or CONMEBOL TV . In the rest of the world, it can be followed by television networks in countries such as Australia, the United States, Spain, China, the United Kingdom or Russia .

Argentine teams are the great dominators of the competition's record. San Lorenzo was the champion of the inaugural edition by winning by an overall result of 4 -0 to Atlético Nacional. In addition to the Cyclone, Boca Juniors, Independiente, Arsenal, Lanús, River Plate and Defensa y Justicia also know what it is like to be proclaimed winners of the contest.

The Copa Sudamericana 2016 was hit by tragedy. Chapecoense and Atlético Nacional were the two teams that were going to play in the grand final. On November 28, the Brazilian club flew to Medellín to play the first leg, but they never reached their destination. His plane suffered an accident in which 71 people died. The Colombian team asked CONMEBOL to declare its rival champion. In addition, he encouraged his fans to go to the Atanasio Girardot Stadium with white clothes and candles to honor the memory of the victims. On December 5, the organizing body accepted the request and presented them with the title as a posthumous tribute.
